I need some help trying to save my Volvo 240 T6 which I started 10 years ago but later sent to garages because of a lack of understand and motivation. Anyway the current garage tried to turn over the engine and found the starter motor doesn't mesh with flywheel and the starter gear hits the side of the ring gear.

Is there a simple way to check which flywheel is currently fitted? (my record keeping is kinda sketchy)

whats a good way to check the start motor? it has a label on it which says RES3137

Sounds to me that you have a 850/960 starter. 99-> has a different(I'd say larger) diameter starter ring gear. If you have a solid flywheel(or <-98 dual mass), then use 960, 850 or x70 starter.
