1991 744 Turbo (the Race Car)

And it now starts and runs on MS after moving 3 wires. Now to get my wideband figured out why it stopped working and I can start working on the details.

Quick MS update, cleaned up the wiring a bit, still need to find time to start tuning but it is on the books to needing to get done so I can start driving it. I hooked up the WB today but couldn't test it as I couldn't find my USB to serial adapter. Still need to hook up the tach output and then it is pretty much tune and drive time.

This is a PNP setup in the sense that I am using the stock LH harness to feed MS Fused power, Switched power along with turn the fuel pump on and off.

Drove her for 2 miles yesterday around the block, AFR's are a little rich at cruise but around 14psi at light throttle opening things were nice and rich. Time for some figuring out and more miles.

ah ****, sorry about the email the other day. I clicked on it while I was working on something else and never went back to it.

no worries, Sometime today I am going to load up auto tune for WUE and then normal map and go for some miles (plus I need a fresh tank of e85 bad as the stuff in the tank is going on 7 months old).

And first proper test drive out of the way, did a few min @ 10psi, and then a few more miles @ 15psi. And lets just say the last few miles were @ 23psi. Sure is nice when you are using someone elses already tuned map.

I forgot to turn off EGO correction so I need to go for another drive with autotune but so far it runs really really good.

Well now that MS is up and running I figured now is a good time to start removing some of the LH wiring. I am not able to 100% get everything out but I am removing them up to the connectors at the strut towers or cutting them as far back as I can in the loom. My new wiring loom should be here sometime this week for me to start cleaning up what is left.

Man what I a mess I am making. I have a few points that I need to double check if I really need to keep the wiring or not but I will startup and test the car tomorrow to see if it runs with those things disconnected as I did build a little PNP setup with my LH connector so lets see how much old stuff I have to keep.

Here is what I have removed so far

A few things labeled so I can put them back in the new loom.

What is left in the engine bay, nothing crossing over engine besides MS now (no a/c stuff)

Cleaned up the wiring harness a bit today, I still have more clean up I want to do but I will work on that another day.

I also installed some new 12" long spark plug boots so I do not burn them again

Car has been driven a few times but been mostly sitting, I have new slicks mounted up and ready to go for 11's but Family life has me to busy to get anything done.

Trans Is prob going to come out for a rebuild a upshifts at light throttle are getting soft and after 5 years of abuse why not, plus I fix 3 leaks and 2 more pop up on the trans so I am getting very tired of it.

Otherwise latest update is Yoshifab Catch Can installed. Horrible placement for working on it but it should work.

Latest stream of updates, Somtime inlate 2017 my throttle shaft broke and caused the engine to suck up a throttle screw toasting the #3 piston.

Well after a lot of months of sitting on my ass and not doing anything I finally 'rebuilt' my spare engine. This engine was given to me as a B-Day present from the AZ Guys many a years ago as a backup engine to build. It is a 1994 b230f that at the time had some 210 compression per cyl so it should do a little better than my 110psi / cyl worn out engine. I threw in some H-Beams (historic rods from a TB'ers engine) and some new rod bearings.

A few details on the head, 1991 530 that had Larger intake and exhaust valves, yoshifab springs and retainers with some light work on the ports around the valves by a local Machine shop.

Getting there

rps20190528_050134_195.jpg

Almost there after 2-3 days of working on it, I have to still get a new oil feed line made up and a few fittings for the return line and then I can start putting the last few things together.

Almost end state

This is one of my all time favorite long-term projects. I've both learned a lot and stolen a lot of ideas from viewing your projects. I'm happy you're still at it!

Thank you, I appreciate it, it has been a long time on these forums and I have to say I wouldn't of done near this much without all of the info from others like yourself. I am actually a little afriad of the car now, the higher CR and healthy lower end mixed with with the big valve head are going to be a bit stupid. The car was already a hand full to drive on the street @ full boost (is there any other way to drive a car?). But I am very excited to see how far I can push this before I put on my new header and GT3582R that is stitting on the shelf.

Progress update as of last night I was able to get the return line hooked up and the feed line along with the easy bits reinstalled.

And then this is the final state

I still need to remove the DSM CAS and check all of the settings to make sure I time it right before the first start, add coolant and connect a ground wire. If I am lucky this afternoon I can find time to try to start it. All this work reminds me of all of the stuff I hate about my car and setup and want to redo, one of the reasons I guess I have enjoyed having this car dead for the last 18months is that I am not constantly wanting to redo everything.

First drive went well, for whatever reason my low boost setting is now 10psi vs the 8psi before (I am guessing the engine CR and head flow are the cause for this).

Either way AFR's are all kinds of off when looking at the datalog but 5 gal of fresh e54 and 3 gal of 18 month old fuel is I am sure the cause. I will fill up with Fresh fuel tomorrow and see how it goes, I guess I can also let LH autotune a bit to the new CR and headflow also.

It felt good to drive it after so long, man that 10psi feels nice and strong like there is a lot left in it. I guess now I have to decide how long I am going to run this cheap oil before I change it , I might do a filter tomorrow after the 10 miles I have put on it just because.
