"Lars" 1993 - 244

I've been restoring Lars for teenage daughter.

Currently in the middle of new belts, most all hoses, water pump, wires, plugs, timing belt, front seals, cleaning pcv system (some new parts) changing fan to electric (from a 740) etc...

Question:

- If I start a restoration thread, do you think any questions I have would be seen there? On should I continue to post them under maintenance and performance?

-In the photo (#1) at the top of the bfront crankshaft cover there is something like a blob of black silicone? Any thoughts on it that? I am hoping they didn't try to plug some issue.

I'm doing the front camshaft, intermediate and crankshaft seals. The crankshaft cover? #2 - I don't know the correct name. I have a new seal. Is there anything I need to be aware of in taking it off? I don't see anything about it in Bentley. Should I take the two round seals out first? and then remove the cover?

Thanks for any help.

Don't know what that blob of stuff would be for. I would clean it off and see if there is any shenanigans going on under there. Probably just a blob that got missed from another repair. I would not remove the front crankshaft seal holder unless there was some reason to do so. Just replace the crank and intermediate shaft seals and you are done.

I would post questions here and just tell the story of your trials and tribulations of the restoration in the other section.

Right click on the image on your hosting site and click 'copy image address'. Then paste that link in the dialog box that opens when you click on the little mountain icon.

Thanks, I thought that I did that, but it didn't show. I'll keep trying.

You did only you didn't make sure the 'http://' that is in the dialog box when it opens got deleted so it messed up the address.

The happy brown gasket follows the edge of the cover all the way up, sticking out a little bit past the edges and around all the bolt "flanges", except the top one. My guess is they broke off the bolt "loop", or the entire top corner of the gasket, and used sealant as a goop-and-pray replacement.

You want the paper gasket because it provides the correct thickness for the flange to be spaced out from the aux shaft.
