ok hi everyone! it has been a long time since i posted, and thats because i hace soent a month on rebuilding my 84 242T's engine. i think alot of you know that when my dad was cleaning the throttle body, he unknowingly dropped a washer inside the intake manifold, and the washer was later sucked into the engine when it was started...this is why i had to rebuild the engine. i would like to say that she is back up and running better then ever! now time for some pictarssss here you go!

This is the throttle body that my dad was cleaning before i woke up that morning

I'm not sure if you can see but if you look really hard you can see where the washer hit inside piston number 2!

hahahahhahahhahahahhaha, i did the same thing back in may.....washer in cyl #2, but i didnt know it till i first cranked the engine up:

Damn, who knew such a small piece of metal in the wrong place could do such damage?

...well, I did already, but not to that extent. Glad to hear you are up and running again.

hahahha that is what happened to me, when i turned on the engine it ran fine for about 30 seconds until the washer got sucked into the engine...=[

washers

Usually you hear some type of metallic clack or clinking sound. I helped rebuild a VW 1600 a little while ago. It was fine when it left the shop. But somehow after about 100 miles on the fresh engine a screw got into cylinder number 1 and made this awesome metallic tapping sound. It bounced all around in there. We had to replace the piston and cylinder but ground the head damage flat. The piston had the top ring compressed just a wee bit which caused the top ring to be seized in it's groove.

Out of curiosity and lack of experience, what happens after that? Does it just start making wretched noises?

Yep, then it'll start puking, then the engine will start jumping around like Richard Simmons on crack, then the noises get louder and the puking gets worse and worse until KAPLOOIE! And then it's all over.

Um, why did you index the water pump?

Heh, I was going to ask the same thing.

Might have been worth the effort of trying to go fishing with a magnet through the spark plug hole, but then you'd have less of an idea about what mechanical mayhem had happened in there.

Similar situation is how I got my B20 R-sport head, it was on a race motor and it sucked a nut from a Weber air cleaner into one of the cylinders. In that case, it split the piston and ruined the engine, but the head just got light nicks.

Someone at my work got a similar sized washer sucked into a bmw v-8 in a newer (1999?) 540i. It caused the cylinder liner to crack wide open, and dump coolant into that cylinder :omg:. Seems pretty weak to me.

When I was in my pre-volvo days, (like 3 years ago) I had a 1973 ford thunderbird. It had a big 460 in it and all i wanted to to was race it.

So one night at the track, i took the air cleaner off and went to screw in the nut back on the carb. Well the nut fell off. I hopped in the engine bay to get it from the bottom of the carb, when i went in, i hit the butterfly valves and in it went.

I started it up, and within a second or two it made the worst noises.
By the time i was at the staging lanes, it was all gone (the noises).

I later did some work on it (head/cam/intake/rollers) and found it had gone to piston #1 and i assume slowly destroyed. The valves were technically big enough to fit the nut, but i think it just gave it a good ass kicking.

Head hadn't a nick on it, iron FTW.

Yea it makes a horrible noise, and when me and my dad heard that noise we were like..."o ****"... so we turned the car off, and started the long process. And about the water pump i dont know why, my dad just took alot of pictuers, i havea bunch more i just chose these ones at like 12:00 am last night lol so yea. and plus my dad likes to be overcareful aboutthings so yea. And no i didnt get a new cam=[ i really wanted to get a preformance cam as well as the adjustable preformance cam gears from ipd. but no such luck =[. but i am happy to say that i'm extremelye happy that it works and runs better then ever, it is proudly sitting out in the parking lot of my school right now soaking up some rays =D (i'm at school) lol

As for the cam, I have a couple. It's not a hard swap as many on here can tell you. And it is very worthwhile. There's plenty of us close by who could help you swap one in. Better mileage and more power and it will cost you an afternoon.
