740 Audio Question...

Just got my 91' 744 t back on the open road. I have a nice pioneer head unit and 4 speakers, all in the doors. When i put the head unit in, i just disregarded the front dash speakers because there small and useless, and hard to replace. Anyway, I want to put new speakers in all the way around. I know sites like crutchfield and the like will "fit" the speakers in my car, and give me the size, but i noticed that the 5-1/4 speakers are a bit small and there is def room to fit a slightly larger speaker in the door.

My question:

What is the largest i could go, speaker wise, and still have them fit in my door nice.

The size of the speaker won't necessarily relate to the quality of the sound that comes from them. It's quite easy to spend very little or a lot of money on speakers that sound like an old dog farting.

Depending on how much you were willing to spend, you could look into buying component speakers. These consist of woofers (to fit into the doors) and tweeters (very small speakers) which you would fit into the dash.

The so called useless tweeters in the dash provide excellent high frequency response and reproduction, something which larger speakers cannot do as effectively.

I had a little bit of an issue finding 5 1/4" woofer speakers of suitable quality in my price range, because I'm a student (thus poor), but also because 5 1/4" speakers are apparently quite a bit more rare here. I wanted the speakers to fit behind the stock grills, so 6" or larger was out of the question.

My recommendation would be to go with a well reputed brand, and if you have the opportunity, to speak to an in-car audio specialist/enthusiast.

-edit-
One other thing, Once I found the speakers I wanted, I had a little bit of an issue clearing the magnets in the doors. I had to cut away a fairly significant amount of metal to get them to fit. I presume going to a larger size speaker may require the same, although clearance may be different on your later model 740.

Yeah i know the size dosen't really decide the sound, i know quality is the key to avoid a muddy tin sound. I went through that stage of "hooking my car up" audio wise back in High school, you know the biggest cheapest speakers i could get along with some crazy sub. Anyway, i thankfully have outgrown that.

The speakers in the dash, were not tweeters but rather full range speakers. I say they are useless because the actual speakers are fused to the cover and bracket, and i rather not have some after market speakers sticking out of my dash. That's why i switched the wires to the doors, so i could hide the speakers.

Yeah i am just looking for a nice clean sound, and simple look. Ill go with some pioneers or alpine speakers once i get some cash.

Thanks for the input.
