I cleaned up my wiring....

Well... what the hell. Maybe something in here is of interest to someone... Let's make a thread.

In addition to having the 242 back up in the air for the turbo fabrimafication, I ripped out the MS harness for some new install and some upgrading. As I was telling Kenny, there was nothing technically wrong with it, everything from the firewall forward looked great... nay fabulous... but behind the firewall it looked like 3 octopus' strangling a hairball. :)

At any rate...

This is what I wanted to make....

This is what I ended up with.... http://www.pbase.com/740atl/image/71676003

I found these cool little crimps at Mcmaster carr... cheap as hell. Note teh double crimps. They crimp onto the cable and the insulation. Just crimped, I can't pull the terminal off. In addition to crimping, I soldered mine as well. http://www.pbase.com/740atl/image/71676006

and of course there's male and female. http://www.pbase.com/740atl/image/71676007

And they clip right into these thingies. http://www.pbase.com/740atl/image/71676005

which then look like this. Damn electrical tape residue. http://www.pbase.com/740atl/image/71676004

and then I added a few wires and resistors and a 2n2222 to the box. http://www.pbase.com/740atl/image/71676008

and I had to re-glubulate the error* daughter card. The 1st g cards are a tad too short to fit tightly in the box.... I believe the 2nd g cards do not have this problem. http://www.pbase.com/740atl/image/71676012

Spark D. Gotta remove R14 and add a transistor... basically duplicating the LED17 function. I hope it works.... it'll sound kinda funnah running on 3 cylinders... and for that matter let's hope the 2nd trigger works.

I have the part numbers on the bags... took me a half hour to find them on mcmaster... I'll post them when I get home tonight.

Pimpage. Making good wiring harnesses is tedious but a great investment of your time.

Anybody seen any good wiring label kits? It's tough to write teeny with a Sharpie at each end of a small wire and I was looking for something to print out of a label maker but that would stay attached to underhood wiring.

Next time you have 2 identical quick connectors next to each other, use opposites so you can't accidently plug them into the wrong connector. ie M-F and then F-M on the other side of the harness.

First rule of IT dept....Never assume something can't be done...I can see them plugged into each other..smoke going everywhere...
person saying..well it fit...It must be correct.

Sweetness Mike, that wiring harness looks great. But your MS case still scares me. So, like, what does all that extra stuff do? I haven't looked into the daughter cards yet so I'm sure they do a ton, and I know you need some of those extra goodies for your VR sensors and spark outputs, right? Still though, that's like 20 more wires and a whole nother card than I used for my boost control upgrade . Oh, I just noticed that you have another DB25? connector above the 37 pin one, that's neat! I bet ya when they first made MS they though "who would EVER need more than these 37 pins?".

Good stuff though.

John

Yeah, it's nuts I agree. I reallly don't like the way it looks. While I like the features of msns-e, all the added wiring really does make a mess of things. I'd normally want all the wiring to be as small as possible, however, I'd never be able to open the case. The db25 was a total compromivse... no way I could fit everything onto the db37... things got so messy, I just said f-it and cut out a slot for the db25... however I'm slowly filling that up too.

The card up top is the msns-e daughter card by error* on msefi.com. I normally would have just made the LM1815 vr sensor conditioning circuit, but the daughter card came with so many more features...

All told,

2 wires go to the VR sensor conditioning circuit... these come in from the db25
1 wire goes from teh VR sensor circuit to pin6 of U4 on the MS board
1 wire comes from the db25 to the daughter card as a 5v source.
1 wire comes from the db25 to the daughter card as a 12v source.
1 wire is ground
1 wire goes from output 2 on the board to the fan circuit on the daughter card
1 wire goes from the fan circuit on the dc to the db25
1 wire from LED17 to db25 to spark output A
1 wire from LED18 to db25 to spark output C
1 wire from LED19 to db25 to spark output B
1 wire from output 4 to db25 to spark output D
1 wire from hall sensor to pin 11 on CPU (2nd trigger).

it's a lot... and frankly looks like ****.... but it works.

I got the harness in the car this weekend and got it running... it looks great. I ran into a configuration issue with my 2nd trigger software, but am slowly working that out.

Mike

That's wicked, I forgot that you're that leet and are running 4 spark ouputs. That sure adds some wiring. Truth be told it would be nice to have the extra connector just to set every available option up for when I finally get around to doing them. As you can tell I'm so infatuated with boost control that I'm really looking forward to playing with other features.

Well... I'm not running 4 spark outputs yet... that was a new addition... I've been running wasted spark.

I ran into some difficulties this weekend with the 2nd trigger and 4 outputs... but I think I may have it solved now with some help from msefi. http://www.msextra.com/viewtopic.php?t=22952

It was actually a crazy weekend... I did wiring, locker, exhaust, IC pipe mockup, etc.... I'm tired.

BTW...are you using the e-fan control? it's insane.

Nope, last I heard (like a year+ ago from Kyle) was that it sucked and didn't work right. Tell me tell me tell me! Right now I just have a temp probe shoved in the upper rad hose, it works well enough, but I'm always looking for something neat to play with.

Very very nice work as always. I've been looking for a place that sells those kind of connectors. Thanks for the heads up.
