what size spacers can i use? I'v got an an 89 740 and i'm looking for the least expensive way to fit Solaris 16's. they are from an S40.
do you think 20mm spacers will be okay?

not wishing to state the bloody obvious but s40s use 4 stud wheels on a 4 x 114.5 pcd(mitsubishi / hyundai) and a 740 uses a 5 x 108.

740 / 760 / 940 use a 20 offset, other 5 stud volvos (fwd) use a 43 offset.

people generally use the opporyunity to space the back axle a bit as welll at the same time and go for 25mm at the front and 30 or 32 mm at the rear.

these need to be hub centric and have wheel studs pressed in, i know that i am going to get shot down in flames for this by various other board posters but do not use ally spacers that then use volvo 850 wheel bolts.

you cannot reliably torque and retorque bolts into alloy and this can have disasterous results if the threads strip. just watch the man in the wheel shop next time you have your wheels done!

i build rally and race cars as a hobby and work as a car and commercial recovery specialist for a living so i know what happens when someone cocks it up - i come out with a hiab and a broom and bring back the remains!

What is the width and offset? 20-30mm works for most FWD volvo wheels onto a 2/7/9 series.

If I'm correct in thinking those wheels are from the newer 5 lug S40, the hub diameter is not as large as most other Volvos. Instead of 65.1mm, it's around 63-63.5mm (you can probably find it through a search at Volvospeed). So if you have wheel-centric adapters made, be sure to get that part right.

this is from an E mail from the person i'm planning on getting them from.

" If you are putting them on a 740 you will definitely need spacers. They touch
the front struts. I tried with some else's car at work."

Towery has it right, the hub centering ring is 63.5mm on the newer S40 and V50 instead of 65.1 as it is on all other FWD/AWD cars. You need to either get the wheels turned out to 65.1 or get spacers made with a smaller hub ring. I would vote for turning out the wheels personally, that way you can run Dale's (245gti) spacers bolt on, and if you want to get rid of them later down the road, it will be easier to sell them.
