---------------
part one
" rusty ol'beater"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This whole thing starts when my brother went and bought a 1984 242 glt that was abused and used. she was a sore to the eye of the onlookers, with her black eye and garbage bag for a window my brother brought her to the McCulloch house hold.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/Volvo242-1-2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

she needed a lot of tlc and caring.first on the list was her looks, My bro got her all preped and painted to make it less of a eye sore. at this time I was driving a 84 764 ti, which i loved a lot but blew up. these pics were taking after my bro painted the 242.
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/Picture1746682692.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/Picture1746682693.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

a few months after that i had to find a new car and it was getting cold outside. My brother had just purchased a 1991 944 turbo from chi town. Him and his buddy drove the 242 down there and back with out any problems. than christmas came around and My brother gave me his 242 for a present, we had a plan where i would pay him 600 hunderd for it. But that damn s.o.b gave it to me for free.:-P

she was hurting with having a horrible idle that looped and died so you would have to 3 foot it. there was no hose hooked up to the actuator either so unlimited boost, along with other minor things.

since it was winter it was hard to work on it in snow. <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/Picture039resize.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/Picture038resize.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
the snow finally melted and it became warm, so that ment wrenching outside!:oogle:
i took these pics when it was warming up, cleaned the car and went into the parking lot.
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC04130.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

and than one day my friend and I taking off and the belts were awfully loud. later down the road i noticed smoke, and said "wtf!" popped the hood to see whats the problem. and notice my alternator had seized and the belts where getting freaking hot and started melting from the friction. so bam! i let it cool down for a couple minutes and kicked the sucker into reverse all the way back home. (it was at night fyi) <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC04173.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
freaking alternator costed me 160 dollars for a new one. and than after the replacing the alternator by myself and not having the system hold a charge. i was driving around with a spare battery in the back changing them when one died. so i took it to the local shop down the street and they get it to old a charge for 60 dollars. soon after bam! major oil leak, my oil pressure sending unit gave away. oil everywhere, after trying to track it down for the longest time i finally got it fixed. i named my car leaky leak.

since it is nice outside i decided to paint the car and see how i like it. sorry i am missing a lot of photos of the painting process. painted the hood and trunk black and i liked how it turned out. the grey wasnt my favorite color. went for a drive to snap some pics.

Okay so one thing that i would like to mention is not all the time i have the camera and when im wrenching im usually "in the zone" and dont take pics. but i will try to keep up on this.

peeked my head under the car to see what i had to do. i got a nice stainless steel crossbraided oil cooler line.<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05110.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
my oil pan is getting horrible. i had to torque all the bolts on it since it was leaking. kinda stopped it. <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05112.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
relocated my horns and took one out. relocated on the inner drivers fender by the charcol canister. <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05113.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
i know my car is K-jet but didnt someone prove you can have a bov? and what on earth is this thing?<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05114.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
and also what should this hose be hooked up too? this is right behind the dizzy on my b21ft <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05119.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

Yeah i think the hose is just there to keep water out.

You should consider a pressure wash on the old engine bay. Soak her down with some degreaser first! It'll make working on it a little less dirty.

yeah the ol'man has the pressure washer i just need toget some degreaser and have a day where i dont need to go anywhere. than i will pressure wash the crap out of this bad boy. i felt a little vaccuum pressure on the hose when the engine was running, would it hurt the engine if i blocked / eliminated this hose?

What did you paint the car with? Not trying to knowck it, but looks a little rough, im looking into paintin gmy car and need some input!

yeah i know it looks rough i havent got to any wet sanding or sanding ingeneral i just roughed up the main coat than laid it on. i need to sand with 900 grit, as well as mix paint thinner with the next coat to make it level more. it is a sloppy 2 coats.

I wouldnt take the hose off, and i certainly wouldn't block it. If it could be blocked off, it wouldn't be there. If that makes sense.

When you wash your engine bay, block the dizzy off with a plastic bag and a zip tie to keep it on there.
Water in the distributor makes your car run well, like it has water in the distributor. Also cover the wiring harness hookups. (i am not sure if thats neccisarry(sp?) but i did it just to be safe). It doesnt take that long to pressure wash. You can do it in two hours. Get a scrub brush too. a nice small one to get in tight spaces. Not a metal brisel one though, a hard plastic brisel.

Sorry for the bad spelling. i am having a tough day with spelling.

Okay so i got up yesterday morning and went out to bring my bro to work since his 940 is down. hop in the car and start it, it was a horrible rough start and soon died after. so i checked all the fuses and the fuel pump was blown, wtf? replace that and she starts and runs like a champ. but the idle was off, hmm she was up to no good with dipping down to 280 rpms and back up to 800 wtf big time!? we get to my bros work i pop the hood and look at her, nothing seemed out of place or dissconnected. so i shut the hood and limped her back to the house, not before stopping twice more. a couple hours go by and i thought it was just some bad gas or something to do with the fuelpump, so i was going to give her a nice drink of some 92 octane and all she did was a horrible starter whine, i was like wtf and she didnt start at all. so i thought to look at the timing belt and was hoping it was okay(even tho we have the intergrated motors) the timing belt was off the bottom pully and wedged so it wasnt spinning over anything. wtf!? by this time church is starting to pull into the parking lot in front of my house. so i put the belt on and try to start it bam! wtf she cranks but wont fire now. hmmm. so i ordered a timing belt off of fcp as well as a upper gasket set. when the old man gets home im tearing this beast down, and pushing the shell from the driveway to the parking lot to the street.

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05190.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
possible oil leak from camshaft seal? <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05191.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
is the timing belt supposed to be this flexable? <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05192.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

If the motor was running when the belt popped off you probably bent a couple of valves. Rebuild time :) .

i dont know if the motor was running with the belt off, when i pulled the cover off after trying to go get gas and it didnt start and the starter only whining. finding the belt off so im not sure if it just happened. and also since b21ft redblocks are intergrated would this mean my car should be fine? it wasnt running for hours or even 30 minutes, wasnt abusing it or boosting at all. i guess i will find out when i tear the baby down and get the ball rolling on my head gasket set.

on a different note, wouldnt the problem be something in the fuel system since it is cranking but not firing. hmm all the fuses are good . not sure if i hear the fuel dis priming.

Not on any 8V redblock Volvo. My 242 snapped the timing belt as I was driving it onto the lift to change the timing belt. Slapped on the new belt and it was good to go.

With a stock cam, pistons, and cylinder head, that is...

of course of course. okay so i am taking the engine apart and have taken off most if not all of the vacuum lines. they are now safely in the trunk, along with the IC and other various objects. the engine bay is starting to clean up in a way, im going to give the damn thing a needed degrease. here we go will update of course when i do more.

okay after pulling the plugs and cleaning the engine bay up a little bit i matched up all the cam gear marks and other gear marks with marks on the block. it was a peice of cake with the plugs out i could turn the crankshaft with my hand and it was easy to feel it compressing. okay so with further inspection of the belt tensioner it seems i have a rock in it. or something along those lines. i am very interested in how it got there.

okay so i got the belt tensioner from fcp today, came in a nice neat little package. slapped her on, made sure everything is lined up, and made sure all my spark plugs had a nice gap on them. im satisfied with my ngk's. the belt sits nice a tight, all i have left to do is wait for the ol'man with the deep dish sockets to torque them ngk's down and try to fire her up. <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f53/peacereef/DSC05229.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>

okay so today going to bring my brother up to work, on our way there the car starts doing this idle drop. it will be fine wot and than when i take her out of gear and roll to a stop the car has a crazy idle like i described.i am resorting to 3 footing it again, god this sucks. so i got home and noticed that the dizzy and all the gears where on the 2nd cyc. hmm my timing belt seems very tight and taught on all the gears, they dont seem to be jumping teeth, but i may be wrong. i went over all the plugs and wires, all the hoses that i could see hoping it was a vaccuum line, but came up with nothing. as i read up top, tft metioned something about a sheered pin? how would i be able to tell?

i have replaced many items as well as cleaned.

1. iac
2.vacuum lines
3.cleaned throttle body
4.cleaned pcv box
5.ngk plugs
6.new wires
7.drained
--------------------

when i did the timing, i matched up the timing marks the best i could all way around.
i might be off a tooth, if i was would it make a drastic change in the performance? and would it stumble wot? slowly going insane over this car. when it is in peek running conditon it runs like a raped ape.

my haynes in the toubleshooting section says.

8.engine lopes while idling or idles erratically
x 1. vacuum leakage
x 2. ail filter clogged
x 3. fuel pump not delivering sufficient fuel
x 4. leaking head gasket
5. timing belt or sprockets worn.
6. camshaft lobes are worn.
