Atom's Amazon Wagon Project Update Thread

These wound up being disasters. I know how to make the second batch better though. I made them out of aluminum thinking I’d be able to load the powdercoat in the recesses and have an enameled look. Didn’t work at all. New ones will be plastic w/powder coated inserts.

I’m not dead. Just busy with work/life and have just been enjoying the car as is. This is also the time of year I typically go dark until iPd. I know it’s silly. Just fun for me. Creates a little intrigue.

Here’s a sneak peek to keep my thread relevant for now (interesting note: I was in a “car club” called Sneak Peek in the early 90s that was for in progress cars)

Probably the sexiest E30 ever

And I agree that the wheels work really well with the car. What is the story on the paint ? Is it an older respray ? It looks a little tired in that last pic but I don't remember it being chaulky or hazed when Greg took pics of it 2 yrs ago.

Try FIVE years ago. It?s the look I was going for all along. When I painted it just before Greg took his shots I used single stage paint so that eventually it would patina. It was the same story with the copper accents originally. I wanted them to start to turn green. Five years of sitting in my driveway took care of the paint, but I have to start over with the copper. Honestly, I really like the look and maintenance is easy. I still wash it from time to time, but there?s still dings in it. I just enjoy not worrying about it.

Hands down. Are those true LMs? Best wheel on the car so far. Love them.

Unfortunately no. I?m still on a serious budget and until I do a five lug conversion I?m not gonna blow a true load on nice wheels.

Just like everything else, trying to do something simple turns into more. Just trying to install a short shifter and the selector on the trans’ bushing was shot. Looks like you’re just supposed to replace it whole. I just bored out what was left and made some aluminum replacement bushings.

On a side note, I think I found the issue with my vibration at 35ish MPH. Apparently when I replaced the CSB, I marked it before disassembly, but did not reassemble is with the correct clocking. We’ll see next time I’m on the road.

Second side note, this weighs +/- 60lbs

Got started on the exhaust today. Weighing everything as I go. The cluster F(you know the rest) of an exhaust system that was on there weighed 60.5 lbs from manifold flanges to tips. It was a very weird, and poorly done, blend of stock and aftermarket bits.

New downpipe (not sure the technical term on non-turbo cars). Stainless to just behind the trans.

Weighing in at 13.5lbs. I am running single 3”. I have already read everywhere that 2.5” is optimum for the M20, but I’m trying to future proof the setup. I’m ok with a little loss now to not have to rebuild later.

(Perforated aluminum is a biatch to weld)

4 lb resonator. It actually does quite a bit too. I put the V band on it and clamped it on quick like. I’ll get a video to upload tomorrow. Still have to build the muffler and finish the axle back. I’m to the rear crossmember at this point though.

The flex joint setup in the new exhaust looks interesting. Lots more flex than the old setup had, but I'd think it would have a flex joint in both of the small downpipe tubes. I'm sure it'll be fine, just curious.

The small one is more of an expansion joint. They had one factory on one if the pipes. Also makes it easier to align dual flanges. The larger one is flex and a heat transfer barrier of sorts for where it transitions into the aluminum piping.
