Atom's Amazon Wagon Project Update Thread

Setup my heater and got some stuff done today. There’s always one thing leads to another with this project. Had to make a new fuse box mount. Got the drivers side of the bay painted (it’s not dry yet cause of the temps....brrrrrrrr, so I didn’t take final pics).

I also decided to cut new grille plates. Just finished deburring them. Need to bend the tops and paint them black. I wanted something just a bit different than stock.

Well, you’d still need 62-64 grilles. This just replaces the rectangular “mesh” that was stock.

Well, that wasn’t the weather issue I expected to have. It was just too windy to get anything done. I had to take the “workshop” down so it wouldn’t blow away or tear. All I could get done was get the driver’s side put back together. I’m leaving the fender unbolted for now cause I’ll need to pull them to finish the cowl sheet metal.

What a difference, engine bay looks so good!

It?s a a good 10 footer. I just wanna get the car on the road. Then I can buzz it to my buddy?s shop one weekend, drop the subframe drivetrain and all, and smooth/final paint the bay. Then I can clean up the ancillary stuff too (booster, rack, etc).

Somewhere in the next batch of stuff, I wanna sort out a better radiator situation. This has a weird small radiator that the latemodel E30s don’t have.

Grill looks awesome, how did you hold the mesh in? I?m missing the factory brackets and at this point I don?t even know what they look like.

I?ll try and remember to take some pictures tonight. I got creative since my shell is now different than most and was a late model shell to begin with. Basically I made an ?L? with one long leg that ?pushes? against the bottom edge of the grill and then I bent the top forward and drilled, tapped and countersunk screws through the top of the shell. Lastly, the crossbar pinches it in too.

I liked the grills silver. Black they look cheap for some reason. Wonder if they would look good if the enire grill assembly was powder coated chrome (not quite chrome).

(DISCLAIMER: I've wondered on powder coating a lot and what sounds good in my head, doesn't always look good real life.
I've had to redo a few pieces.)
