Default 242 turbo whining sound

Unsure of what it is exactly but I am getting a whining sound when I begin to boost and when Iím at a higher speed and Itís coasting, sometimes. The engine also stumbles a little bit as Iím driving and itís warming up still. The whine sound is kind of like a whir sound. Could this be bad turbo bearings?

Hows that shaft play? A lil bit of up and down is ok, any in and out is no bueno. What you may be describing is the wheels hitting the compressor housing, no good :(

With a cold engine as kyote suggests. You can remove the intake pipe on the front of the turbo and check for excessive shaft play. As turbos wear it's common to get a sonic imbalance which translates into noise. I had one that sounded like a siren and it lasted another three years or so before I had to replace the turbo. If it's hitting the housing when you check it. The turbo is done.
