Vintage Early 140 gauge cluster compatibility

While we're on the subject of early 140 dashboard components...

For the HVAC controls, is it correct that the wheels (heat/def/floor) light up but the labels above stay dark? Just have to memorize them for nighttime driving like where the lights, wipers, etc are?

Yes.

Here's the pic of the choke light switch on the '72. It's hard to see but it's sandwiched between the dash and the nut/washer.

Thanks for crawling around in there to get the photo! Unfortunately that setup doesn't seem very inspiring for a homemade micro-switch solution.

After lots of mixing and matching the best of my spare parts, the cluster is in and I'm happy with the OD light.

These things are a great example of Volvo constantly making small changes every year. I miss the more glassy look of the 71 dummy lights, but the 72 lights are brighter and easier to read. Also, the 72 circuit board doesn't bolt up to the 71 cluster body, and of course all of the light sockets are incompatible because they switched the conductive side of the board. Finally, there were at least 3 different methods used to mount and isolate the voltage regulator.

At the moment, I don't think the choke light is worth the effort required to rig up a switch.
