Default Historic Volvo Racing & Rally Society - HVRRS

The Historic Volvo Racing & Rally Society for Pre-1975 Volvos on Facebook was formed almost two years ago and now has over 3,000 members from around the world. It is only for Volvos which have a race, rally, hillclimb, competion history or participate in modern vintage races and rallys with a B16, B18, B20 or B30 pushrod engines. The carburetor is king, although pre-1975 Bosch FI systems are ok. No other forms of induction systems are allowed other than period superchargers like the Judson.

The photos in this thread give you an idea of some of the posts members make. Cars, parts, and speed equipment are also offered for sale.

Thanks go out to mikep, who allowed us to post this here.

Check out the The Historic Volvo Racing & Rally Society here.

It is about time 240s were included in the vintage racing scene. A Radwood vintage racing series that would include 240s and other cool 80s cars would be nice.

dbarton sorry that you don't approve of the HVRRS cutoff date. Since you probably have knowledge of or are in contact with the owners of 240 and later model Volvos vintage raced today maybe this would be a good time for you or someone else to get a vintage racing organization catering to these cars started?

Historic or vintage means different things to the many of the clubs and organizations in the vintage racing community, and the participants. For instance we race with Vintage Sports Car Club of America VSCCA.org which had a 1959 cutoff date. As interest in newer vehicles has changed over time the club has allowed cars dating up to the early 1970s to be allowed to compete after being approved by a committee including an original "Volvo's from Hell" 1972 142 SCCA ITB car.

There are other vintage racing clubs and organizations in which post-1974 OHC Volvos can compete.

However, OHC engines and the turbocharger, which was offered later in the 240 series are considered modern by most vintage Volvo racing enthusiasts, who are earlier pushrod engine engine enthusiasts. Compared with each other the two are like apples and oranges. The pairing can't compete in a level playing field with each other and that's the reason for the Historic Volvo Racing & Rally Society cutoff date.

That being said, this might be a good time for 240 racing and rally enthusiasts to band together and start their own organization as later cars are being allowed into to some of the more progressive clubs today.
But what if one was to graft a turbocharger from a Corvair Spyder or Oldsmobile Jetfire to an OHV motor? Is that an acceptable edge case?

No although, the period-correct US made Judson supercharger above and British Shorrock units are OK.

Carbs: SU, Solex, Weber, double-throat period Mikuni and others allowed.

FI: pre-1975 Bosch and SCCA ITB legal injection allowed on 140 series cars. Modern Weber type individual throttle body injection, not allowed.

Hi Dave, I have no issue with the cutoff whatsoever. I agree with it because it's the changeover of eras from pushrods to ohc as you mention. I am very pleased to see the pictures and wish you guys lots of good times. It's great to see the sport grow. We used to have a yearly rally with the scca region in this area.

Sorry if your comment without an an emoji was not read as you had intended. That's one of the many issues caused by the modern forms of communications we all use today.

As much as I dislike emojis (can we still call them emoticons?) they do convey things like sarcasm more reliably than straight text.

It's alive and well, check it out sometime. If you posted a non-racing/rally related post it probably was removed by a moderator since road car posts aren't allowed (plenty of other FB pages for that.)

I've tried, all I get is a "content not found" error.
