T5 to T5 adapter (whiteblock engine to Ford 5 speed)

Hello, I am the new guy to this forum & thread and will ask a few 'dumb' questions, so please bear with me. I live in Alice Springs, NT Australia, and have a good used 20V 2.5 Turbo engine from an Aussie-spec Ford Focus XR5. I would like to convert it to an inline RWD setup. Questions:
1. What bellhousing should I use for the RWD swap? Model and year(s) would be helpful.
2. What model Volvo six engine would have the donor oil pan to cut & shorten?
Thanks for any help!
Ray

I assumed you wanted to go to a manual as well. If an automatic is what you want, the AW30-40 in the 960 is a fine transmission. Its the same thing that the Supra used and they have been built to handle crazy power for the dragstrip. You can also manually control them.

Bellhousing, Etc. from 960 for RWD T5 - Thanks

Thanks for the info. So I intend to get the manual trans (M90?) bell housing from a 960, I-6 oil pan, pickup and water tube to modify for my Turbo 5. I'll use the adapter from Roger Dee to mate up with a World class T5 for a 'Stang. Now, all I need to do is locate a donor 960 ..... wonder if any 960's made it to Australia? Might have to hunt around for awhile....
Thanks again!

Theres heaps of 960s over here, id be more worried about the lack of mounting bosses on the side of the motor to use with the 960 mounts

Ive actually got a T5 - whiteblock adapter plate with hardware down in Melbourne im thinking of selling if you are interested?

T5 Adapter and Hardware

Well, good to talk to a local Volvo guy. Yes, I would be interested in the conversion bits. I have searched ebay and gumtree and haven't found any 960's cars or parts. None up here in Alice Springs, NT. If you can help me locate the donor parts, that would be sweet. We can hook up on the phone or facebook sometime too.
Cheers

Yep, I will go manual. I plan to us a BW T5 from a 'stang, so I think I need the M90 bell housing to use with the adapter that is available. Not sure about that, I saw a M90 in a pic in this forum, and it didn't appear to have a removable bell housing, am I wrong?

I'm not sure what body this little ex-XR5 Turbo will go into, but it will be either a small drag car, and maybe a burnout car. I'm used to building up Fords and Holdens for the drags, this will be my first turbo anything car. Should be a real adventure, wonder if anyone has done it in Oz yet ......

The m90 doesn't have a removable bell housing. You need an automatic transmission's bellhousing from a 960.

That is what you use to mate to the t5 transmission.

960 Automatic Bellhousing

Thanks for the info, I now will look for a 960 with white motor and automatic trans, so I can get the belhousing, oil pan, etc. Then the adapter ......

What is the Auto Trans designation ?

In case I'm hunting the wreckers, what is the 960 Auto Trans called? Type or model number.
Thanks

AW30-40. It's an Aisin Warner transmission that was also used in the Supra. I think they called it something different though. Like A340 or something like that.

Any way, it should be the only automatic that volvo put in the 960 behind the 6 cylinder.

Almost all 960's will be a whiteblock 6 cylinder. Some euro markets (like Italy) got a 960 with a redblock 4 cylinder. But I think Australian markets got the B6304 and B6254 6 cylinder whiteblocks. Both are the same, just different capacities.

B= Benzine (gasoline, petrol)
6= Number of cylinders
30 or 25= Displacement
4= Valves per cylinder

So a B6304 is a Gas powered, 3 liter, 4 valve per cylinder engine.

They were all "whiteblocks" which means they were aluminum blocks. The old redblocks are iron and painted red. Hence the name.

The 960 was the last rear wheel drive car Volvo did. It was the ONLY rwd car with a whiteblock. Most of them had the AW30-40 automatic, but some got the M90 5 speed manual.

So the 960 has the only oilpan, pickup, motor mounts, water tube, and bellhousing that will work in a RWD platform. Some of that stuff can be worked around with custom bits, but the oilpan, pickup, and bellhousing are real important if you want to put a FWD engine into a RWD chassis.

FWIW, the B6304 share a lot of stuff with the later FWD twin turbo 6 cylinders. You can use parts from those cars to get some easy gains if you are looking for around 300 HP.

Thread-resurrection!

Because info still be slim on this complete transformation. (I've scoured, honest!)

This will be an ongoing project/list/how-to and I will give a complete list of junk and costs you need to do this right. So stay tuned!

I still need other items to complete the Hydraulic pedal cluster, which will be added later. Probably a mix of Volvo and after market AN lines. And custom driveshaft which will come last.

Not a cheapskate conversion at all. I figure anyone doing this will probably have a beefy T6/T5 Turbo motor attached.

If anyone has completed this on TB please chime in and share your journey!

Perfect fit for clutch disc to PP!!!

I can't squeeze the M90 in my English Hot Rod...

Hello, new here. Read all the posts with great interest, but can't find an answer to this.........

Is it true I can get the 960 AW 30-40 Auto box on the back of my 5 cylinder 2.4turbo whiteblock?

I am struggling with clutch space.....

Currently running a 4 pot Ford and 5 speed T9 Ford box. Car goes to the chassis shop at end of November........

Based in London

+1

Has anyone completed the whiteblock + T5 trans conversion via the DeeWorks adapter?

The whiteblock/RWD swaps that I am aware of do not use the T5.
