M46 clutch slave cylinder retaining ring?

Do these have no retainer or is this a defect?

Working on an automatic to m46 swap. Figured out that the clutch fork is too far from the slave by firing the piston out. I'm surprised that there's no retainer and no groove in the cylinder for one, so only the boot and the fork hold it together. Is this normal?

I don't see one in the parts diagram so apparently that's the way they're made.

I feel like when hydraulics are involved you have a decent chance of blowing out the clip if it overtravels. At least this way it doesn't gouge up the piston.
